MOUNT MERU & KILIMANJARO

Mount Meru is sometimes described as a preparation climb for Kilimanjaro. While it can certainly be useful for trekkers preparing for a higher mountain, Meru deserves to be experienced on its own.

The crater, wildlife, quieter trails and dramatic summit ridge make it a beautiful mountain adventure in its own right.

We love Meru because the trek feels like a journey through Tanzania itself. You begin among forest and wildlife, climb through changing vegetation, and eventually reach the open volcanic slopes with spectacular views across the landscape.

If the weather is clear, sunrise from Socialist Peak can be unforgettable, with Mount Kilimanjaro standing in the distance.

As guides, we don't want you thinking only about reaching the summit. We want you to enjoy the journey there.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your 4-day journey through Tanzania, crafted for unforgettable moments at every stop.

Day 1

MOMELLA GATE → MIRIAKAMBA HUT

Full Board Miriakamba Hut

Your adventure begins at Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park. The first part of the trek is particularly special because Mount Meru is not just a mountain trail. You walk through an area where wildlife lives, and it is possible to see animals such as giraffes, buffaloes, and monkeys. We then continue through the forest as the trail gradually climbs towards Miriakamba Hut, where we spend our first night. Walking time: Approximately 4–6 hours

Day 2

MIRIAKAMBA HUT → SADDLE HUT

Full Board Overnight: Saddle Hut

After breakfast, we continue climbing through the forest before reaching the open moorland. The scenery changes noticeably as we gain altitude. From the trail, there are beautiful views across Arusha and the surrounding countryside. We arrive at Saddle Hut, our base for the night. If you still have some energy, you can make the short climb to Little Meru for excellent views around sunset. Walking time: Approximately 3–5 hours

Day 3

SADDLE HUT → SOCIALIST PEAK → MIRIAKAMBA HUT

Full Board Overnight: Miriakamba Hut

This is the big day. We wake very early and begin our summit climb while it is still dark. The trail becomes steeper as we approach the crater rim, and we take the climb steadily, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude. As the sun rises, the landscape begins to appear around you. From Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres, you can enjoy incredible views of Mount Meru's volcanic crater and, when conditions are clear, Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. After spending time at the summit, we descend back to Saddle Hut before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut. Walking time: Approximately 10–14 hours

Day 4

MIRIAKAMBA HUT → MOMELLA GATE → ARUSHA

After breakfast, we begin our final descent towards Momella Gate. The trail becomes easier as we lose altitude and return into the forest. Once we reach the gate, our driver will meet you and transfer you back to Arusha. Your Mount Meru adventure ends here, but for many of our guests, this is only the beginning of their Tanzania journey. Walking time: Approximately 3–5 hours
