Tour Overview
A 6-day summit expedition on Kilimanjaro's most historic trail — built around the comfort of mountain hut accommodation, a certified guide team, daily health monitoring, and a structured acclimatization programme that gives your body every advantage on the way to Uhuru Peak.
Known as the "Coca-Cola Route" — a name earned through decades of popularity as Kilimanjaro's most established trail — Marangu approaches the mountain from the southeastern side via a well-maintained, non-technical path that guides climbers through all five of Kilimanjaro's ecological zones: rainforest, heather and moorland, alpine desert, and finally the arctic summit zone at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).
Unlike other Kilimanjaro routes, Marangu uses the same trail for both ascent and descent. This means familiar terrain on the way down, consistent infrastructure throughout, and straightforward navigation from gate to summit. It is one of the most beginner-friendly routes on the mountain — but make no mistake: Kilimanjaro is a serious high-altitude expedition, and altitude rather than terrain remains the primary challenge on every route.
This package is run as a private departure. Your itinerary, pace, guide team, and crew are dedicated exclusively to your group. You will not be combined with other travellers on the mountain.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi.
Meet your mountain guide for a comprehensive trek briefing and equipment inspection. Any missing trekking gear can be rented locally before your climb begins.
Day 2
Marangu Gate - Mandara Hut ( Arrival in RainForest)
Marangu Gate - Mandara Hut ( Arrival in RainForest)
Your 6-day Marangu Route journey — from the rainforest gate to the Roof of Africa and back.
After an early morning briefing at the EJM office and equipment check in Moshi, your team transfers to Marangu Gate (1,870 m) for park registration and crew introductions. The trek begins through dense montane rainforest — one of Kilimanjaro's most rewarding sections, rich with giant ferns, Impatiens flowers, and the sounds of mountain birds. Keep an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys in the canopy.
The trail climbs gradually through forest for approximately 8 km (3–4 hours) before reaching Mandara Hut — a cluster of A-frame huts set in a clearing at the forest edge. This first night at 2,720 m is a gentle introduction to altitude. Your guide will conduct your first pulse oximetry reading after dinner.

Day 3
Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut (Into in the Moorland)
Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut (Into in the Moorland)
Leaving the rainforest behind, today's trail climbs out of the treeline into open heath and moorland — a dramatic landscape change that signals your ascent into Kilimanjaro's higher ecological zones. Giant heathers draped in lichen give way to open plateau views, and on a clear morning, both Kibo Peak and the jagged towers of Mawenzi come into full view.
The day covers approximately 12 km over 5–6 hours of trekking. The climb is steady and non-technical, following a well-marked path across open moorland with distant views of the summit crater. Horombo Hut (3,720 m) is one of the mountain's largest camp areas — a series of A-frame huts set around a dining and briefing hall, with excellent views of Mawenzi to the east.
This evening's health check is particularly important — 3,720 meters is the altitude at which mild altitude sickness symptoms can begin. Your guide will assess all climbers and adjust tomorrow's plan accordingly.
Day 4
Acclimatisation Day at Horombo Hut (Climb High, Sleep Low)
Acclimatisation Day at Horombo Hut (Climb High, Sleep Low)
This is the day that sets the 6-day itinerary apart from the 5-day option — and the single most important reason why Explore Jambo Maasai strongly recommends the longer schedule. Rather than pushing immediately toward Kibo Hut, your group spends the morning on an acclimatisation hike to Mawenzi Tarn (approximately 4,330 m), then returns to sleep at Horombo.
This "climb high, sleep low" principle is the cornerstone of high-altitude acclimatisation physiology. The body's red blood cell production accelerates with altitude exposure, and sleeping lower allows you to recover while retaining the physiological gains made higher up. Climbers who take this day consistently report fewer altitude symptoms and higher summit success rates.
The afternoon is spent at rest: hydration, nutrition, gentle stretching, and your guide's briefing on what to expect on summit night. An early dinner and lights-out precede the long Day 4 approach to Kibo Hut.
Day 5
Horombo Hut -Kibo Hut (The Alpine Desert)
Horombo Hut -Kibo Hut (The Alpine Desert)
Today, the landscape makes its most dramatic transformation yet. Leaving the last vegetation of the moorland, the trail enters Kilimanjaro's alpine desert — a vast, austere plateau of volcanic ash, rock, and sporadic boulders stretching toward the base of the summit crater. The air is noticeably thinner, the colours muted, and the silence complete. This is Kilimanjaro's most remote-feeling environment.
The trail crosses the saddle between Kibo Peak and Mawenzi, passing the landmark "Last Water Point" where climbers fill all water bottles for the final push. The 15 km (6–7 hours) to Kibo Hut is the longest day of the route, traversing a gradual but relentless climb across open terrain with full exposure to the elements.
Arrival at Kibo Hut (4,703 m) marks your highest sleeping altitude. Dinner is served early — typically 17:00 — and your guide will conduct a thorough pre-summit health check. Climbers are advised to rest immediately after dinner and attempt sleep by 19:00, as the summit departure begins around midnight.
Day 6
Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut
Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut
The defining moment. At approximately midnight (local time), your team leaves Kibo Hut in the darkness for the summit push. Headlamps, layered clothing, and a slow, steady pace ("pole pole") carry the group up the steep zigzagging trail through volcanic scree toward Gillman's Point on the crater rim (5,681 m). This section — roughly 5–7 hours in length — is the most physically demanding part of the entire climb. Cold temperatures, wind, and significantly reduced oxygen make every step deliberate.
From Gillman's Point, the trail follows the crater rim path for a further 45–75 minutes to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point in Africa. Summit arrival is timed to coincide with dawn, when the horizon turns gold, and the shadow of Kilimanjaro stretches hundreds of kilometres across the plains below. This is the moment the climb has been building toward.
After photographs and a brief celebration at the summit sign, the descent begins immediately to prevent further cold exposure. Climbers descend to Kibo Hut for a warm drink and short rest, then continue all the way back down to Horombo Hut (3,720 m) for the night — a long but enormously satisfying final trekking day.
Day 7
Horombo hut -Marangu Gate - Moshi (Final descent & Certificate)
Horombo hut -Marangu Gate - Moshi (Final descent & Certificate)
The final morning on the mountain. After breakfast at Horombo, the descent through moorland and back into the cool rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,870 m) takes approximately 4–5 hours. The familiar trail feels very different on the way down — your legs are stronger in different ways, the forest feels lush and welcoming after days above the treeline, and the sense of completion builds with every step.
At Marangu Gate, your official KINAPA summit certificate is presented to all climbers who reached Gilman's Point or above. The crew gathers for a final tip ceremony — a meaningful moment to thank the guides, assistant guides, cook, and porters who made the climb possible.
Transfer back to your Moshi hotel for a well-deserved shower, a celebration lunch, and the chance to rest before your onward journey. If you would like to extend your Tanzania adventure, ask us about our Northern Circuit Safari or Zanzibar beach extensions — a perfect contrast after the mountain
