Group Tanzania safari 2026: shared, group, or private?

Before you compare prices, decide how you want to share the vehicle.

The cheapest safari and the best-value safari are rarely the same trip.

You may find one quote at $1,600 and another at $3,200 for what looks like the same route. The difference is usually simple: one is a seat in a shared vehicle; the other is the whole vehicle. This guide explains each format, what it costs, what you give up, and what to check before you pay.

In short

Group safaris cost less because the guide, fuel, vehicle, and crater fee are split between guests. In return, you follow a fixed route at the group's pace. Solo travellers and budget travellers get the most from them. If you want your own vehicle, guide and pace, choose a private safari.

The three ways to travel

Joining (shared) safari

You buy one seat in a shared 4x4 with other guests. The route and dates are fixed, usually 4 to 8 days from Arusha. This is the lowest price per person.

Fixed-departure group tour

A scheduled trip with set dates, a set itinerary and a set group size. Some are camping trips; others use comfortable lodges.

Private safari

Your own vehicle and guide, with a route, pace and accommodation you choose. It costs more for one or two people and gets much closer to group prices when three or more share the vehicle.

Which one fits you?

  • Travelling solo, watching the budget: a joining safari.
  • Want company and set dates: a fixed-departure group tour.
  • Couple, family or friends who want their own pace: a private safari.
  • Photographer, or set on one sighting such as a river crossing: a private safari.
  • Adding Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro or Kenya: a private safari or custom package.

What the price must cover

Budget safaris run about $230 to $350 per person per day, mid-range lodges $400 to $600, and luxury from $700. Part of that cost is fixed, because park fees are set by the authorities and every operator pays the same.

Included

  • Return airport transfers (Kilimanjaro / Arusha)
  • All national park & conservation fees
  • All accommodation (lodge or camping)
  • Full board — all meals & drinking water
  • Professional TANAPA-licensed guide
  • Pop-top 4×4 Land Cruiser (max 6 guests)
  • Ngorongoro Crater descent fee
  • Game drives as per itinerary

Not Included

  • International flights to/from Tanzania
  • Tanzania e-Visa (USD 50, apply online)
  • Travel insurance (required)
  • Personal items & souvenirs
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Optional hot-air balloon safari
  • Tips for guide & camp staff (discretionary)

On a six-day Northern Circuit trip, these fees alone come to $300 to $400 or more per person. A quote far below the others is missing something: fees, a camp outside the park, or an overloaded vehicle. Ask for a list of what is included.

What you give up in a shared vehicle

  • Pace. The guide moves the group on when the group is ready, even if the leopard is still there.
  • Space. Six or seven guests share the windows and roof on long drives.
  • Route. You cannot add a night or swap parks.
  • Group mix. Your trip depends on who else books.
  • Guide. You get whoever leads that departure.

None of these ruins a trip, but it matters most to photographers and families with young children.

Routes by trip length

4 to 5 days

Tarangire or Lake Manyara, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro. The most common group route, with long drives and little rest.

6 to 8 days

Tarangire, two or three nights in the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater. The best choice for first-timers. The extra Serengeti night changes what you see.

8 to 10 days: migration

The route follows the herds, so the month decides it (see below). Camp location matters more than the park name: two camps both sold as "northern Serengeti" can be hours apart. See our Great Migration safari.

10 to 14 days: safari plus Zanzibar

Wildlife first, beach second. Treat the flight to Zanzibar as a travel day, and pack soft bags up to 15 to 20 kg for domestic flights.

Best time to go

  • January to March: southern Serengeti and Ndutu. Calving season, strong predator activity, fewer crowds.
  • June to October: dry season. The best overall viewing and the highest prices.
  • July to October: northern Serengeti and Mara River crossings. A crossing is never guaranteed on a given day.
  • November to December: short rains. Green, quiet and cheaper.
  • April to May: long rains. The quietest and cheapest months, with some slow roads.

Book 6 to 12 months ahead for June to October and school holidays. For the green seasons, 2 to 4 months is usually enough.
