Mikumi National Park

Tanzania's most accessible Southern Circuit park ÔÇö vast open plains reminiscent of the Serengeti, teeming with big game just four hours from Dar es Salaam.

Best time: June to October (dry season, best game viewing), January to March (green season, fewer visitors)

Mikumi National Park is the gateway to Tanzania's Southern Circuit and one of the most accessible wildlife reserves in the country. Covering 3,230 square kilometres, it borders the vast Nyerere National Park to the south, creating an enormous contiguous wildlife corridor.

The Mkata Floodplain, the park's centrepiece, draws inevitable comparisons to the Serengeti ÔÇö open grasslands dotted with palm trees and distant mountain backdrops, alive with herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, and impala. Lion prides patrol the plain year-round, and the predator-prey dynamics are on full display.

Mikumi's proximity to Dar es Salaam makes it a realistic weekend or short-break safari destination ÔÇö a luxury that the Northern Circuit parks simply cannot offer. For visitors arriving into Tanzania's commercial capital rather than Arusha, Mikumi provides immediate access to genuine big-game safari without a connecting flight.

The park also serves as an important educational and research site, with the University of Dar es Salaam's field station located within its boundaries and ongoing wildlife research programmes that contribute to Tanzania's conservation knowledge.

Wildlife & What You'll See

Mikumi's open plains support large populations of buffalo (herds of 200+), wildebeest, zebra, impala, and eland. Giraffe are abundant and the Mkata Floodplain hosts one of Tanzania's most photogenic giraffe populations silhouetted against the Uluguru Mountains.

Lion, leopard, spotted hyena, and African wild dog are the key predators. Elephant herds move through the park regularly. The hippo pools along the Mkata River offer reliable sightings. Over 400 bird species have been recorded, including lilac-breasted rollers, yellow-throated longclaws, and martial eagles.

How to Get There

Mikumi is just 4 hours (283 km) from Dar es Salaam along the well-maintained A7 highway ÔÇö the main road to Iringa and Zambia passes directly through the park. This makes it the easiest Southern Circuit park to reach by road. Charter flights from Dar es Salaam take approximately 1 hour.

Park Fees & Regulations

Park entry fees are $53.10 per adult per 24 hours (non-resident). Children aged 5-15 pay $17.70. Vehicle and guide fees apply separately and are typically included in your safari package.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Mikumi as a day trip from Dar es Salaam?
Yes. Mikumi is just 4 hours from Dar es Salaam, making it feasible as a long day trip. However, we recommend at least one night to enjoy morning and afternoon game drives ÔÇö the best wildlife activity happens at dawn and dusk. A 2-night stay allows a thorough exploration.
How does Mikumi compare to the Serengeti?
Mikumi's open Mkata Floodplain draws frequent Serengeti comparisons, and the wildlife diversity is genuinely impressive ÔÇö lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and large herds of wildebeest and zebra. The Serengeti is larger and hosts the Great Migration, but Mikumi offers authentic big-game viewing at a fraction of the cost and travel time from Dar es Salaam.
Is Mikumi good for first-time safari visitors?
Excellent. Mikumi's accessibility, relatively low cost, and reliable wildlife sightings make it one of the best introductions to safari in Tanzania. The park is easy to navigate, the game viewing is rewarding, and the 4-hour drive from Dar es Salaam means no flights are needed.
