Most visitors come to Zanzibar for the beaches — and the beaches deliver. But limiting yourself to the sand means missing some of East Africa's richest cultural and natural experiences.

1. Stone Town Walking Tour

Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's most atmospheric urban experiences. Narrow alleys wind past ornately carved Swahili doors, crumbling merchants' houses, rooftop restaurants, and bustling markets. A guided walking tour is essential — without one, you will get lost (which is also part of the charm).

2. Forodhani Gardens Night Market

Every evening, Stone Town's waterfront transforms into an open-air food market. Zanzibar pizza, grilled octopus, sugarcane juice, and fresh seafood sizzle under lamplight. It is the island's best dining experience — and the most affordable.

3. Spice Plantation Tour

Zanzibar is the "Spice Island" for good reason. A plantation tour lets you see, smell, taste, and identify cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, vanilla, and lemongrass growing in their natural state.

4. Jozani Forest & Red Colobus Monkeys

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is the last stronghold of the Zanzibar red colobus monkey — found nowhere else on Earth. The forest boardwalk trail takes about an hour and virtually guarantees sightings.

5. Mnemba Atoll Snorkelling

This private island atoll off the northeast coast offers some of East Africa's finest snorkelling. Crystal-clear water, abundant tropical fish, sea turtles, and occasional dolphin encounters.

6. Sunset Dhow Cruise

Sailing on a traditional wooden dhow as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean is quintessential Zanzibar. Most cruises depart from Nungwi or Stone Town and include drinks and snacks.

7. The Rock Restaurant

A seafood restaurant perched on a rock in the ocean off Michamvi Peninsula. At low tide you can walk to it; at high tide, boats ferry diners across. The setting alone makes it one of Zanzibar's most memorable meals.
